Cohesion Policy programmes (Objectives 1 and 2) have implemented a broad range of measurements and activities relating to the environmental quality in the European Union. In the Regions under Objective 1, especially in the new Member States, an important share of the budgets available were assigned to the financing of environmental infrastructures in the fields of water supply, water collection and water treatment as well as collection and treatment of municipal solid waste. In the regions under Objective 2, programmes have addressed more specific challenges. In addition, programmes have not implemented a large number of measures (in the field of the climate change renewable energies and improvement of energy efficiency), but they have rather addressed this field as a horizontal priority

The aim of the project is to assess the contribution of ERDF (objectives 1 and 2) to the implementation of environmental strategies in the European Union. This study covers the ERDF interventions in the environmental sector as well as interventions to reduce impacts of climate change. The study focus on 14 selected Member States (Spain, Italy, Germany, Greece, Portugal, France, Poland, Ireland, UK, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Latvia and Finland) and their 2000-2006 programmes, which count for more than 90% of the total investments in environment through the Structural Funds.
